Twenty-five years ago, on a rainy day in early March, NAMM’s Museum of Making Music opened its doors to the public for the first time. Despite the downpour, a space was created—one that offered a unique entry point into the world of music. As NAMM’s, and the world’s, first and only museum dedicated to celebrating the people and products that bring music to life, it became a place where instrument innovators, music makers, industry and education professionals, history enthusiasts, music lovers, and curious minds from all walks of life could connect.
Since that day, nearly 700,000 individuals of all ages have engaged with the Museum of Making Music, each bringing their own connection to music and sound. As the world changed, we, too, felt the responsibility to evolve and better serve our community. Two mini retrofits and a full-scale transformation—completed during the COVID closure (that was an adventure!)—have created new opportunities for learning and discovery. These enhancements ensure that our exhibits and programs continue to spark curiosity and deepen appreciation for the ecosystem of music and sound products—the industry that provides the tools we all need to express ourselves.
Some of the most cherished moments over the past 25 years have come from our special exhibitions, which have explored everything from the artistry of instrument making to the stories of creators who have transformed the musical landscape and influenced the sound product industry. We’ve been privileged to work with extraordinary artists and industry leaders who have shared their talent and knowledge with our community. And we are truly humbled by the instrument lenders and donors who have made both our core and special exhibitions come to life. Take a look back at some of our exhibition work!
We’ve hosted hundreds of events, concerts, galas, educational programs, and special exhibitions, each offering a unique way to explore music in meaningful and inspiring ways. Unforgettable moments include adults learning an instrument for the first time or rediscovering one they played long ago, students returning years later to share that the museum inspired them to pursue a career in music, staff beaming with pride at a successful exhibition opening, gala, or event, and volunteers forming a tight-knit community of mutual respect and support.
Throughout it all, my personal goal has been to offer a variety of pathways to help every visitor, concertgoer, and program participant discover, embrace or further their own place in the world of music and sound. Whether as a listener, maker, supporter, champion, or advocate—musical expression belongs to all of us, and we each play a role in shaping its future and honoring its past. After all, the story of music making is the story of us—as individuals, generations, communities, and cultures. It reflects on, shares, acknowledges, amplifies and preserves the full human experience.
As you can see, it is really the people—YOU—who give the museum its meaning. Visitors, supporters, and performers have brought music to life within these walls (if only they could talk!) turning each moment into something special. The museum is shaped not only by those who have worked here but also by the thousands of individuals who have shared their experiences, stories, and love of music and sound. We have learned as much from you as you have from us, and we are deeply grateful for every person who has been part of this journey.
As we celebrate this milestone, we celebrate you—our community, our visitors, and all who find joy in and around music. Here’s to 25 years of making music, making memories, and honoring the vibrant industry that brings sound to life in myriad ways—and to many more years to come!
