Celebrating Lifelong Learning: Adult Music Programs at the Museum of Making Music

At the Museum of Making Music, the pursuit of music stands as a testament to our enduring human capacity for growth, connection, and artistry. Guided by a philosophy that emphasizes a non-competitive, positive, and supportive environment, our adult music programs—the North Coastal New Horizons Band, the North Coast Strings Orchestra, and the new Resonance Vocal Ensemble launching in February—offer participants an opportunity to engage deeply with the art of music-making. These programs enrich lives, foster strong community ties, and promote health, wellness, and musical excellence.

Our Programs

The North Coastal New Horizons Band, established in 2002, invites adults to explore or rekindle a connection with wind, brass, and percussion instruments. With a curriculum that balances foundational technique with classic and contemporary band repertoire, participants build confidence and skill. The program offers both a beginning band for newcomers and a concert band for more experienced players.

The North Coast Strings Orchestra, launched in 2008, serves string players (violin, viola, cello, upright bass) of all levels, from beginners to advanced musicians. The program’s structure accommodates diverse skill levels with sections for beginners, intermediate players, and an advanced orchestra that welcomes both committed amateurs and professionals. Repertoire spans classical masterpieces, folk arrangements, and contemporary works, creating a rich and rewarding artistic experience.

Rounding out the museum’s offerings, the Resonance Vocal Ensemble debuts this February. This choir, tailored for adult singers with prior vocal experience, emphasizes vocal technique, musical interpretation, and the transformative power of harmonization. It provides an elevated platform for those eager to deepen their choral journey.

The Benefits of Music-Making

The advantages of participating in these programs extend far beyond the development of musical skills. Engaging in music-making enhances cognitive function, reduces stress, and fosters emotional well-being. Moreover, these programs create a sense of belonging, connecting individuals through shared artistic endeavors. Every rehearsal and performance becomes a meaningful opportunity to strengthen community bonds and celebrate the beauty of collaborative achievement.
